Exploring the effect of business intelligence competencies on innovation and performance among Indian MSMEs
Authors
Dr. Raj Kumar Singh
Abstract
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of the
Indian economy, contributing nearly 30 percent of the country's GDP and
employing over 110 million people. Yet, a large number of these enterprises
continue to operate with limited access to structured data and analytical
tools, which restricts their ability to innovate and compete effectively. This
paper examines how Business Intelligence (BI) competencies — including data
literacy, analytical decision-making, digital infrastructure readiness, and BI
tool adoption — influence both innovation capacity and overall business
performance in Indian MSMEs. Drawing on secondary data, existing empirical
literature, and policy reports, the study situates its findings within the
unique structural, cultural, and economic realities of Indian small businesses.
The paper argues that BI competencies, even when partially adopted, create
measurable improvements in operational efficiency, product development cycles,
and market responsiveness. It also highlights how government initiatives such
as Digital India and the MSME Innovation Scheme have begun to create an
enabling environment for BI adoption. The findings carry practical implications
for MSME owners, consultants, financial institutions, and policymakers seeking
to strengthen India's small business ecosystem through technology-led
transformation.
